At its best, the entertainment industry offers moviegoers, television viewers, and music listeners a reflection of themselves. Historically, however, those reflections have been predominantly monochromatic—but that appears to be changing. From inclusion riders and the "4 percent challenge" to box-office successes of female- and minority-led casts, diversity is now being demanded across the entertainment industry, both in front of and behind the camera. As audiences increasingly prefer diverse content, consumer tastes are confirming the corporate adage that diversity is, in fact, good for business. With the recent small but significant gains for women and people of color throughout the entertainment industry, how are both content creators and distributors taking the lead in improving diversity in media?
