MENA's startup ecosystem has become much more structured in recent years. The region now has over 3,000 startups, with the UAE leading the pack as home to 42 percent of them, followed by Egypt with 12 percent. The activity culminated last year in several high-value deals, including the acquisition of Souq.com by Amazon, the purchase of the majority stake of Namshi.com by Emaar Malls, and the half billion dollars raised by Careem from the likes of Rakuten, Inc., STC Ventures, Kingdom Holding Company, and Daimler. While the signs of progress are indisputable, the Arab startup sector still draws far less investor interest than the global leaders.
