Momentum toward promoting healthier choices in the food environment is growing in response to concerns over chronic health conditions related to diet. Food retailers, health plans, technology platforms, and policymakers have spearheaded initiatives to support healthy eating for customers and beneficiaries. Immense progress has been made in advancing this work, from new technologies breaking down interoperability barriers, to increased federal guidance centering healthy food in federal nutrition programs. For example, USDA has approved SNAP Food Restriction Waivers that restrict the purchase of non-nutritious items such as soda and candy in several states, and define “unhealthy” differently. However, there is still work to be done in aligning stakeholders across the food industry, policy, and health-care sectors around a common set of definitions. In this session, stakeholders will share perspectives and break down silos while working towards creating a standard definition of healthy.
