Starting, developing, and maintaining an art collection is a serious commitment that often ends with the bestowal of a legacy. Yet motivations and ambitions vary among collectors. Art requires, of course, a financial investment, but more often than not there is more to art collecting than money. Being involved in collecting means being part of a much broader picture—an ecosystem of relationships with artists, dealers, galleries, museums, patron groups, and others. Collecting, however, is foremost a personal experience and, as many collectors attest, the pursuit of art is engaging, entertaining, and extremely gratifying. A discussion of the art of collecting and the collection of experience allows a two-tier perspective focusing, first, on the art-world ecosystem and, second, on collectors' personal journeys and their experience of collecting.
