Senior Associate, Scientific Program and Grants Administration
The Senior Associate – Scientific Program & Grants Administration – will work under the supervision of the Scientific Program Director and in coordination with MRA staff to assist with MRA’s grantmaking program, including support for the peer-review process, issuance of grant award letters, and review and processing of progress reports and payments. The position also plays a major role in assisting with the MRA Annual Scientific Retreat, annual portfolio analysis, and developing written products that help translate scientific learnings and reports for broader audiences including donors, patients, and other scientists. The position will also assist in the submission of funding requests to pharmaceutical companies and biotechs, and subsequent reporting.
The mission of the Melanoma Research Alliance is to end suffering and death due to melanoma by collaborating with all stakeholders to accelerate powerful research, advance cures for all patients, and prevent more melanomas. MRA has awarded more than $110 million to melanoma research programs around the globe, and through our unique collaborative approach, has leveraged an additional $200 million. MRA was launched in 2007 by Debra and Leon Black under the auspices of the Milken Institute, and due to the ongoing support of our founders, 100% of every donation to MRA supports melanoma research.
Position Functions and Responsibilities
Grants Program Administration:
• Assist with administrative review of grant submissions, draft internal summaries and reports, and assist with external correspondence relating to grants submission/review process;
• Act as the primary liaison to MRA’s online grant system (proposalCENTRAL), including setting award mechanisms, running reports, coordinating voting during grant review meetings, working with ProposalCENTRAL staff for any issues that arise;
• Assist in the coordination of logistics and preparation for MRA’s Grant Review Committee
• Draft award letters and related correspondence;
• Review progress reports and update report metrics to include key scientific findings, publications, presentations, collaborations, and additional funding;
• Process and track award payments;
• Ensure award files and research portfolio materials are up to date;
• Coordinate with MRA staff and investigators to ensure seamless flow of ongoing oversight process;
• Assist in planning and conducting site visits; and
• Assist in outreach to Scientific and Medical Advisory Panels, and Dermatology Council.
• Assist in coding new grant awards to the Common Scientific Outline and support the Scientific Program Director in semi-annual portfolio analyses
• Work with the MRA Director of Communications to conduct background research and draft articles for e-news, annual report, and other publications;
• Assist in developing a scientific program and patient engagement content for the website;
• Assist with drafting updates on the scientific program for MRA’s Board of Directors;
• Draft lay-friendly updates of progress made on research awards for donors/sponsors.
Annual Scientific Retreat:
• Work with Scientific Program Director and other MRA staff to implement the Annual Scientific Retreat, focusing on such tasks as sponsorship landscaping and tracking, speaker coordination, materials development and production, on-site activities, and follow up.
• Other duties as requested, which may include, but are not limited to background research on scientific topics, liaising with vendors engaged in the scientific program (writers, consultants, and proposalCENTRAL), and other administrative tasks.
• Master’s degree required, Ph.D. preferred – ideally within basic, clinical, and/or bio-medical spaces;
• Demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work with a high degree of accuracy;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including translating complex scientific topics into patient and/or lay-friendly content;
• Ability to multi-task;
• Self-starter who will thrive in a team environment;
• Sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion;
• Excellent computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and standard database programs;
• Experience with grant management systems – specifically ProposalCentral – strongly preferred but not required;
• Ability to travel occasionally.
