NEW YORK, N.Y. (September 20, 2023) — The Milken Institute is on the ground at the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Each fall, New York City becomes the center for global thought leaders as heads of government, corporate executives, and influential change makers meet to discuss the greatest challenges facing our world. This year, the Milken Institute looks forward to convening a series of sessions to advance our programmatic work across health, philanthropy, climate financing, and global investment. Leaders from the Institute will also connect with key stakeholders, further accelerating the progress and impact of the events taking place this week.
Today, the president of the UN General Assembly, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, will convene heads of state and government for a one-day meeting to adopt a political declaration aimed at mobilizing political will at the national, regional, and international levels for pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. Esther Krofah, Milken Institute executive vice president of health, will participate in the Plenary Segment of the High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, where leaders will deliver remarks on the need for political momentum, solidarity, and further financing. This engagement builds on the Institute’s health initiatives, which promote investments and policies to strengthen pandemic preparedness and facilitate coordination and collaboration, specifically around a global early warning system for pandemics and the fight against anti-microbial resistance.
Alongside key dialogues on development financing, the Institute will convene an Investment Forum on The New Faces of Africa—Changing the African Investment Paradigm. The Investment Forum, in partnership with Invest Africa, will feature a fireside conversation between H.E. William Ruto, president of Kenya, and Michael Milken, chairman of the Milken Institute, on strengthening Africa’s partnerships with the rest of the world, the continent’s plans to unlock growth and socioeconomic development, and what more needs to be done to mobilize capital toward these goals. Following the fireside conversation, an investor panel will discuss innovation and emerging trends in climate solutions across Africa.
