What's Next in Aging: Leveraging Plans and Progress to Meet the Moment

-

Adults aged 65 and older are the fastest-growing demographic in the workforce and will soon comprise nearly 20 percent of the US population. There is much to celebrate in this growth. Their continued contributions help power our economy and communities through their above average consumer spending and by providing critical volunteer time in their communities. But challenges are also well-documented. Three in four will need some type of care or assistance to age in community, which makes it critical to focus on strategies to improve heath span while also addressing caregiver and accessible housing shortages. Innovative planning across all sectors is required to ensure that policies, systems, and structures are deployed to address this unprecedented shift. Multisector plans for aging are in place or being developed in many states; the creation of a National Plan on Aging is underway; and corporate leaders are starting to take action. With all of this activity, what's next for aging, and where can we make needed progress?
