WASHINGTON –Leaders across medical research – from patients to policymakers, from academia to advocates, from philanthropists to federal regulators and from investors to industry – will gather at the Grant Hyatt New York, Nov. 13 to 15, for one purpose: Partnering for Cures.
This meeting, hosted by FasterCures, will give participants an opportunity for hands-on problem-solving and candid conversations covering topics including investing in biomedicine and innovation opportunities for the president-elect.
“Across the field of medical research, we are all focused on accelerating solutions for patients,” said Margaret Anderson, executive director of FasterCures, a center of the Milken Institute. “Partnering for Cures is a unique opportunity to harness that passion and our diverse perspectives into collaborative solutions that can make a real difference in advancing treatments and cures.”
During the meeting, FasterCures will release several reports and resources:
- Rx for Innovation: Recommendations for the New Administration: This report distills the findings from interviews with more than 150 thought leaders across the research spectrum. FasterCures staff analyzed the interviews and developed 26 discrete recommendations to help the next administration advance biomedical innovation. - Expanding the Science of Patient Input: The Power of Language: To help us move collectively toward a common language that supports the science of patient input, FasterCures reviewed more than 100 public documents and Web sites and found nearly 200 terms related to patient engagement. - Patients Count Network: This searchable, digital directory of patient-based organizations showcases research strategies, funding portfolios, resources and collaborations. Users can identify potential partners, learn about current trends in venture philanthropy and benchmark progress. - Patient Engagement Library: This online library aims to help users find a variety of annotated resources about patient engagement to help them launch patient-centered efforts, enhance existing programs or identify where more work is needed. Resources cover clinical trials, patient-reported outcomes, benefit-risk assessment and more. For more on this topic, check out the kiosks displaying the library in the ballroom lobby.
- Power of Ideas: This collection of essays offers insights from thought leaders on how cross-sector collaboration can advance research and benefit patients. Essays include “The University of the Future” and “Be in the Business of Going out of Business.”
- Patient Perspective Value Framework Draft Methodology: Over the past year, Avalere Health and FasterCures, in coordination with a Steering Committee of diverse stakeholders, have developed a draft methodology to create a value framework, which will be released next year. This report serves as a call to action for patients, patient advocates and other experts in this space to provide detailed feedback on this draft and offer suggestions as to how it might be applied. The draft framework will be released during a workshop, Who Tells Their Story? Determining Value from the Patient Perspective, on Monday, Nov. 14 at 2:45 p.m. and available on the Avalere and FasterCures Web sites after that time.
- Venturing into New Territory: In an article to be published in the first quarter 2017 issue of the Milken Institute Review, FasterCures’ Maureen Japha explores a new paradigm of medical research: venture philanthropies are investing in identifying unmet needs in specific fields of research, along with figuring out how they can most effectively leverage their funding to maximize therapeutic advancement.
